Hey its me, Meg
I make all sorts of stuff with all sorts of materials, but these days I consider myself a Potter.
I got my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Rhode Island College, where I learned to throw clay on the wheel. Quickly, mugs became my favorite thing to make and I worked to perfect them. Lightweight, ergonomic handles, glazing. All these challenges I tackled in pursuit of a comfortable and useful every day object, that is pleasing to the eye and to the hand.
After spending a few years as a hobby potter working other jobs full time, I left Rhode Island for Philadelphia, PA, where I pursued a Masters of Fine Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. While at PAFA, I became known as “the ceramics person”, as the school didn’t have an official ceramics department- I was it. I taught workshops and lead skill shares in efforts to grow the already germinating seed of interest in ceramics as a medium.
But always I thought of my little sunlit studio in Rhode Island. After graduating, I returned home to RI, and almost immediately was diagnosed with Stage 1 Ovarian Cancer. Surgery and chemotherapy couldn’t keep me from the studio, I spent every spare moment I could making things.
Now in remission, I have a new appreciation for this wacky world we get to live in, for the community that has supported me, and for this medium of work that allows me to express myself.
